David R. Brooks was born in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1968, the third child of Rabbi Hershel and Alma Brooks. In 1977, David’s family relocated to Orange County California where he attended Loara High School in Anaheim, and first developed an interest in still and video photography. During his junior and senior years, David launched his own business shooting weddings, high school and college sporting events, and created a high school video yearbook. Upon graduation in 1986, David went on to study film and TV at San Diego State University and graduated at the top of his class with a Bachelor of Science degree in Film and Television production in 1992.
While at San Diego State University, David co-wrote and directed a 30 minute 16mm narrative short film entitled Sunshine Maker for which David was voted “Best Director” by his peers. David was awarded Best Director at the Fresh Film Festival held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles in 1992. Sunshine Maker was also aired nationally on Bravo Television during the summer of 1993, having been selected as the grand prize winner of The New Filmmakers Award, a national short film competition sponsored by Bravo Television and Kodak.
Since Graduation, David has traveled extensively, visiting more than forty countries world wide, and worked on many feature films, television, and commercials in various capacities including crane and dolly operation, transportation, production, etc. In addition, David has worked as a professional still photographer for many years shooting portraiture, events, sports, and large group portraits with companies such as Yary Photo in Orange County, and PBM Images in San Diego.
In 2005 David, together with his brother Zev, formed DZB Productions LLC, a film production company with the purpose of bringing to the screen quality low budget movies with character and heart. In 2010 David and Zev completed their first feature film, “The Yankles” a movie about an orthodox rabbinical college baseball team that makes it to the college world series. David and Zev co-wrote the script and produced the movie with Zev taking the helm as executive producer, and David making his feature film directorial debut. “The Yankles”, starring among others Brian Wimmer (China Beach, Less Than Zero) and Don Most (Happy Days) ran theatrically in over 50 major and minor film festivals throughout 2010 and 2011 winning 9 awards including Best Comedy, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Audience Choice. In 2012, “The Yankles” was picked up by Mark Cuban and Magnolia Pictures for North American home video distribution. The movie was released across all platforms including DVD, Bluray, Pay Per View, On Demand, iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, Blockbuster, and major retailers including Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and many more. In 2013, “The Yankles Official Motion Picture Soundtrack” was released by MVD Entertainment on physical CD and digital download available on iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby.
